From September 16th to 22nd, the Week of Sustainable Mobility is celebrated, an opportunity to reflect on the future of cities and the role of technology applied to transportation.
In this context, the concept of Smart Cities takes center stage as a development model that integrates innovation, sustainability, and citizen participation to improve the quality of life in urban environments.
Urban Challenges in Argentina and Latin America
Rapid growth, pressure on infrastructure, and the need for comprehensive solutions.
Cities in the region face structural problems related to resource management, traffic congestion, pollution, and inequality in transportation access.
In this scenario, smart cities emerge as a strategic response, capable of integrating cutting-edge technologies with a people-centered approach.
“Mobility is the heart of a city. It cannot be smart if it is not sustainable, equitable, and inclusive,” says Sebastián Báez, CEO of Kaizen Networks.
Buenos Aires: Regional Leadership in Urban Mobility
According to the Urban Mobility Readiness Index 2022, developed by the Oliver Wyman Forum and the University of California, Berkeley, Buenos Aires ranks 41st out of 60 global capitals and is positioned as the second best-evaluated city in Latin America, behind Santiago de Chile. This performance is attributed to a diversified and accessible public transportation system.
Furthermore, a joint research effort by CONICET, UTN, and UNSAM places Argentina in the 28th position out of 220 countries in developing urban mobility policies, confirming its regional leadership.
Key Components of Smart Urban Mobility
Technology, efficiency, and citizen experience at the core of the transformation.
Kaizen Networks highlights the pillars that define a city ready for sustainable mobility:
- Smart public transportation: route optimization, digital management, and apps to enhance user experience
- Electromobility: promotion of electric vehicles in public and private transportation
- Traffic management with AI: adaptive traffic lights, predictive analysis, and emissions reduction
- Mobility as a Service (MaaS): integration of transportation modes in a single digital platform
Sustainable mobility is key to a smart city.
Call to Action: Innovation and Collaboration for Sustainable Cities
Governments, companies, and citizens must work together to transform the urban model.
The transition to smarter cities requires political will, technological investment, and active participation. It is essential to promote multisectoral collaboration to design solutions that address the current challenges and build a fairer, more efficient, and sustainable urban future.
“Innovation must serve people and the planet,” concludes Báez.
